Part 1: Discipleship and The Gravity You Don’t Notice

Why Discipleship Is Always Happening

There’s a quiet force at work in your life right now.

You didn’t wake up thinking about it. You didn’t plan around it. You didn’t even notice it.

And yet… it’s shaping you.

Forming the way we think, feel, act, and believe.

Molding our attitudes, opinions, and the way we dress, look, and speak.

Not metaphorically. Constantly.

Relentlessly.

Almost invisibly.

Like gravity.

The Invisible Force That Forms You

Think about gravity for a moment.

It’s always there… pulling, shaping, grounding. It keeps your feet on the floor and your world from floating into chaos.

You don’t wake up each morning and say, “Thank God gravity is still working.” You just live inside it.

But imagine if it changed.

  • If gravity weakened, you’d bounce like a slow-motion astronaut.

  • If it intensified, your body would compress under the weight.

  • If it vanished, you’d drift, disoriented, untethered.

You only notice gravity when something goes wrong.

Gravity is the reason I only use cups with lids for my coffee on Sunday mornings on the way to church. One minute, I’m happily sipping my morning brew. Next, the car hits a pothole, the coffee sloshes upward, and a brown coffee stain takes up residence on my shirt.

I remember getting dressed for school one morning and flying down the stairs on my seat when I slipped on the way to breakfast. Gravity is like that.

I became painfully aware of gravity when the door to an under-the-deck RV storage bin suddenly introduced itself to the top of my head.

We only notice gravity’s invisible hand when we see and feel its effects.

The same is true of discipleship.

Discipleship: Gravity for the Soul

We tend to think of discipleship as a disciplined program for spiritual growth.

A class.
A Bible study.
A church initiative.

But that’s far too small.

Discipleship is not something that starts when you sign up.

It’s something that never stops.

From the moment you were born, you have been shaped, formed, and grounded by forces around you.

Right now, without permission, forces you can’t see are shouting for your attention. Like gravity, they are relentless.

Consider your morning commute – which doesn’t seem to be a likely hotspot for formation.

The ads you hear on the radio or see on roadside billboards, the bus, or the subway are trying to sell you this month’s version of “The Good Life.” How does the day’s traffic – or morning news – affect your cheery mood? Are the unpleasant voices of your angry boss, spouse, or child still echoing endlessly in your head? Did you check your phone to pull a message, and 30 minutes later discover you’ve been held hostage by your social media feed?

Formation is always happening – even during something as simple as a morning commute.

Like gravity, this kind of discipleship is constant. It is always pulling your thoughts, your desires, your habits, your identity.

You are not if being discipled.

You are always being discipled.

What Is a Disciple, Really?

Simply, a disciple is:

“One who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another; a convinced adherent of a school or individual.” Merriam-Webster.

You don’t have to be a Christian – or religious at all – to be a disciple.

You can be discipled by thinkers like Sigmund Freud or Karl Marx long after they’re gone.

You can be discipled by influencers, algorithms, outrage cycles, or even the unspoken emotional patterns of your family.

You don’t need a classroom to have a teacher.

Because discipleship is not about proximity.

It’s about influence.

Ultimately, a disciple is a person who learns from someone or something and becomes like them in thought, lifestyle, and action.

The Story So Far

This is Part 1.

We’ve uncovered the reality:

👉 Discipleship is constant, like gravity
👉 You are always being formed
👉 Something is always shaping who you are becoming

In Part 2, we'll trace this all the way back — to the very first classroom any of us ever sat in. We'll discover just how early the forming starts, and start exposing the World’s Disciple-Making Machine.
