Part 3: The Guru behind spiritual formation in the world.
Blindness, Tools, Strategy, and Analgesics
There’s a formation happening in the world that feels natural.
Almost automatic.
Like gravity again… but this time, something is bending the field.
Not just pulling.
Distorting.
And if Part 1 showed us that discipleship is always happening, and Part 2 (implicitly) began to reveal how the world disciples us, then Part 3 pulls back the curtain on something deeper:
This formation is not accidental. An intelligent master strategist is pulling the strings, a spiritual formation “guru” shaping the system itself.
Throughout this blog, I’ll be drawing on several Scripture translations to clarify the text.
The Gospel Isn’t Just Ignored — It’s Hidden
The apostle Paul writes something startling in 2 Corinthians:
“If our gospel be hidden, it is hidden to those who are lost…” 2 Cor. 4, KJV.
But the word hidden doesn’t just mean misplaced.
It carries the idea of something stolen and concealed. (Strong’s Concordance).
Like a treasure taken and buried so no one can find it.
Loaded dice after bets are down.
No-refund bait-and-switch sales.
And then Paul answers the question we almost hesitate to ask:
Who would do that?
“The god of this age,” Paul answers in 2 Corinthians 4:4.
An Active Strategy, Not Passive Drift
This is where things sharpen.
The shaping forces of the world are not neutral.
They are not random.
They are not merely cultural drift.
There is an active effort to:
Steal what is true
Conceal what is life-giving
Distort what would bring clarity
Not occasionally.
Continuously.
The “god of this age” is not lounging idly in the background.
He is working like a skilled craftsman… but instead of forming people into life, he forms them into blindness. (2 Cor. 4:4)
(4) The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. NIV.
The Ultimate Discipleship System
If you’re a fan of conspiracy theories, here’s one that dwarfs them all:
The world itself is a discipleship engine.
And behind it is a blinding, guiding influence shaping its direction.
The goal?
To keep people from seeing the light of the gospel of Christ. (2 Cor. 4:4b).
Because if that light breaks through…
Everything changes.
So the system is designed to immunize people against truth.
Not always by rejecting it outright.
But by:
Distracting from it
Redefining it
Dulling the appetite for it
A quiet inoculation of the soul.
And religious inoculation means giving you just enough truth to make you blind to the reality of the Gospel, subtly dulling your spiritual senses and making authentic discipleship more challenging.
This is subtle, deceptive, and nefarious. The god of this age slowly immunizes your soul with just enough twisted truth to mimic the look and feel of the authentic gospel of God’s grace. He’s an expert at creating a spiritual mirage that looks and feels inviting – and crafty enough to convince you that the mouthful of sand is really refreshing. Blind to the Gospel.
And to the guru behind the world’s discipleship machine.
Discipled Into Blindness
(17) Therefore, I say this, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk even as also the rest of the nations walk, in the vanity of their mind,
(18) having been darkened in the intellect, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance which is in them because of the hardness of their heart, Eph 4:17-18, LITV.
Paul describes the outcome with surgical precision:
Vanity of mind (Eph 4:17)
Darkened intellect (Eph 4:18)
Alienation from the life of God Eph (4:18)
Ignorance and Hardness of Heart Eph (4:18)
This is not just about behavior.
It’s about perception.
A way of seeing the world where:
Independence feels like wisdom
Self-definition feels like freedom
God becomes unnecessary
This is the echo of an ancient whisper from the garden:
“You can decide good and evil for yourself.”
And it still trains us daily.
Creating The Illusion of Independence
At the center of this formation is a powerful, lying vanity:
“I am enough to determine what is good.”
It sounds strong.
It feels intelligent.
It even looks like maturity.
But underneath, it severs connection from the very source of life.
What Scripture calls “vanity” is not stupidity.
It’s misplaced confidence.
A mind untethered from God… convinced it sees clearly.
The Story So Far
👉 There is a spiritual formation guru pulling everyone’s strings.
👉 It’s happening to everyone – and you don’t even know it.
👉 The plan is to inoculate you with just enough truth to make you blind to the Gospel.
👉 The illusion of free-thinking and independence untethers us from God’s life.
But that’s only the beginning of the story.
