Part 5: The Tools That Shape Us (1 of 3)
The Gospel of More: Lust of the Eyes
By now, we've seen something we can't unsee.
A formation is taking place in the world. It is not neutral. It is not accidental. There is a strategist behind it — a "guru" shaping the system itself.
And the result of that system is a numbed heart. An anesthetized soul. Novocain for the inner life.
But numbness is not the end.
It's the setup.
Because once the heart becomes insensitive and dull, it is much easier to guide.
How the System Moves Inward
John names the tools of the master strategist:
"The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life…" 1 John 2:16, NIV.
This is how formation moves from outside us… to inside us, from influence… to discipleship.
What We See Begins to Shape Us
The lust of the eyes begins with what we see.
But it doesn't stay there.
Because what we repeatedly see… we eventually begin to desire. And the message is constant:
"You are not enough. You need more."
The Gospel of "More"
This is the language of our world. Whether it's a new car, a new prescription, a new image, or a better lifestyle — the message doesn't change.
You are not enough. What you have is not enough. If only you had more… then you would be okay.
An Ancient Voice, Still Speaking
The Gospel of More is not new.
Adam and Eve first heard the guru's voice in the garden: "What God gave you is not enough."
Only now, it's amplified. Louder. More persistent.
It shouts through advertising, entertainment, social media, and the carefully crafted lives of influencers. And it disciples us into believing:
your worth equals your wealth
your identity equals your image
your value equals your lifestyle
your performance as a Christian equals your spiritual value
The Illusion of the Better Life
You see it everywhere — the promise that fulfillment is one click, one purchase, one upgrade away.
Even relationships carry this pressure: "A better one is just a swipe away."
And slowly… we begin to believe it.
Why This Still Matters for Christians
Becoming a Christian does not end formation.
It changes the invitation… but not the competing voices.
Even now, the world still speaks. Old patterns echo. The flesh still leans towards independence.
And if the external pressure stopped tomorrow, there is enough internal momentum to keep the old patterns alive.
This is not just a problem for people who don’t know Jesus. The guru has apprenticed us all – and we haven’t noticed.
Creating The Illusion of Independence
At the center of this formation is a powerful, lying vanity:
“I am enough to determine what is good.”
It sounds strong.
It feels intelligent.
It even looks like maturity.
But underneath, it severs connection from the very source of life.
What Scripture calls “vanity” is not stupidity.
It’s misplaced confidence.
A mind untethered from God… convinced it sees clearly.
A Quiet Invitation
Take a moment and sit with this — not in theory, but in the specifics of your own life:
Where do I see this system still shaping me?
In my reactions. In my desires. In my numbness. In what feels normal. In what brings pleasure. In what I reach for when I’m afraid or in pain.
Where and how has the guru numbed me?
What fears and insecurities are still forming me?
How do lust and pride still have a hand on the wheel?
These aren’t comfortable questions. But they’re the right ones.
The Story So Far
👉 What we see shapes what we desire
👉 The Gospel of More is an ancient voice — telling us what God gave us isn't enough
👉 This formation runs on the illusion that a better life is always just one more thing away
👉 Repeated exposure quietly forms us into entitlement and covetousness
In Part 6, we'll look at the tool that works even closer to home — not through what we see, but through what we feel.
