Part 7: The Tools That Shape Us (3 of 3)

The Gospel of Image and Status: The Pride of Life

If the first tools shape desire…

This one shapes identity.

The Comparison Engine

Pride of Life is built on comparison.

Jesus captures it in a single moment when he tells the story of the arrogant Pharisee and the lowly Tax Collector. (Luke 18:10-14), NIV.

In Luke 18:10-14, the Pharisee prays, “God, I thank you that I am not like other men - extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.” Verse 11, NIV. (Italics mine).

Not just wanting to be good…

But needing to be better.

Better than him. Better than them. Better than that group. Better than that failure.

Because as long as someone is below me…I feel secure. I judge – and self-justify.

The Avatar We Carry

We all carry an internal image. An “avatar.”

An “avatar.”

We curate this carefully constructed image to appear more successful, more impressive, and more acceptable.

And we don’t just imagine it…we live from it.

Your avatar is a self-constructed fiction rooted in pride...but it feels as real as your next breath.

The Gospel of Image and Status

The system reinforces this constantly. Performance gives me worth, achievement gives me identity, and recognition gives me value.

And over time, we believe: “If I can become that version of me… I will be enough.”

Especially if I can perform well enough to convince others that my avatar is really me.

Even in Spiritual Spaces

This doesn’t stay in culture. It shows up in faith and churches everywhere.

  • Subtle superiority

  • Quiet judgment

  • Comparison masked as discernment

“I’m more aware… more mature… more right…”

A Fragile Identity

This system looks strong.

But our avatar is incredibly fragile, because it constantly asks:

  • “Am I still enough?”

  • “Am I still ahead?”

  • “Am I still seen the right way?”

  • “Am I still pleasing and performing well enough to maintain my image?”

And when that slips…everything shakes.

Seeing the Whole System Clearly

Now we can see it – the three tools working together.

  • Lust of the eyes → “You need more.”

  • Lust of the flesh → “You need to feel better.”

  • Pride of life → “You need to be better.”

Different voices. Same formation.

A Final Question

Sit with this:

Where do you see this shaping you?

In what you chase? In what and how you soothe? In how you compare?

Because discipleship is like gravity.

It is constant. It pulls and shapes you. Even if you don’t realize it.

The only question left is: What is forming you… and into whose image?

The Story So Far

👉 The Pride of Life is built on comparison.
👉 We create an image – an avatar – we want the world to see.
👉 The Gospel of Image and Status creates an identity as unstable as a house of cards.

In Part 8, we’ll uncover another tool in the disciple-making machine — one that’s on every screen, in every form of media, stirring your emotions and vying for your attention. It’s called outrage. And it’s forming you more than you know.
